This week is National Homelessness Week, a chance for all communities within Australia to reflect on the issue of homelessness. To consider the magnitude of the problem right now and how we can seek to fix it.
In 2023-24, 280,000 people were assisted by specialist homelessness services. Six in ten of these identified as female and about 15,600 were women aged 55 or older.*
In unpacking this data, the human stories behind each of these people are both bleak and compelling. Bleak for the likely factors that have caused this person to be without a home, and compelling for the strength they show in asking for support and navigating their way forward on a pathway to longer-term housing.
With this in mind, we share with you Celine’s story via our colleages in the inCommunity Connect team, which she has generously agreed to share in the hope that it will inspire others experiencing homelessness to seek support like she did. Celine shares how upon meeting the Assertive Outreach Team she was quickly connected with the OneBridge team funded by Beddown.
“The nurses got the medication I needed and got me back on track with my health. They would often call to check up on me after that first meeting”.
